SIG Membership Application
The Oncology Nursing Society (ONS) is a national organization of more than 33,000 registered nurses and other healthcare professionals dedicated to excellence in patient care, teaching, research and education in the field of oncology. A prime goal of ONS is to provide a network of peer support and exchange for oncology nurses. To do so, ONS introduced a formal structure of Special Interest Groups (SIG) to facilitate networking of ONS members in an identified subspecialty area. The Chemotherapy SIG was established in 1989.
Chemotherapy SIG Mission Statement
The Chemotherapy SIG facilitates its members to achieve the goals of the ONS mission statement. The Chemotherapy SIG addresses the needs of oncology nurses by:
- serving as a forum for communication within the SIG and to the members-at-large;
- promoting excellence in the field of chemotherapy nursing;
- sharing educational resources and clinical expertise with other SIGs, various ONS project teams and the membership-at-large.
Goals
- Develop increased opportunities to expand the knowledge base of Chemotherapy SIG members.
- Promote collaboration among nurses administering chemotherapy.
- Increase resources in order to ensure the continued growth of the Chemotherapy SIG and ONS.
Activities
The Chemotherapy SIG fulfills its mission through activities such as collaboration with various ONS project teams and through writing newsletter columns on a variety of chemotherapy related topics. The SIG also participates in presenting both basic and advanced level educational topics at the ONS Annual Congress and the Annual Institutes of Learning.
Benefits/Communication
The SIG meets once per year during the ONS Annual Congress. Chemotherapy SIG leaders communicate regularly with SIG members through written communiques, and a newsletter which is published four times each year. The newsletter features timely articles related to chemotherapy, tips for improved chemotherapy nursing practice, and reports on SIG activities and projects. A Chemotherapy SIG Directory is available for rapid access to SIG members willing to share expertise in specific areas. The SIG also provides presentation, publication and leadership opportunities.
Membership Requirements
All SIG members must be members in good standing of the national Oncology Nursing Society. ONS members receive one free SIG membership. Additional SIG memberships are $15 each.
